Fillings

Dental fillings are used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay, fractures, teeth grinding and other causes.

Modern dental fillings are made of composite material and are almost indistinguishable from natural teeth. Composite (white) fillings do not require additional removal of healthy tissue as opposed to silver ones and are therefore less likely to cause the tooth to fracture in the future.

Fillings

While silver fillings are still administered as a cost – effective restorative material, we only use white composite fillings as they are the modern standard for the dental community.

Fillings

The placement of a dental filling is a routine procedure and is generally completed in a single appointment. At the start of the procedure local anaesthetic is administered to prevent pain and discomfort. Then the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is removed, the area cleaned and then restored with a bonded composite (white) filling. The filling is shaped to resemble a natural tooth and polished. To make sure that you are comfortable with the size and shape of the filling, your dentist will perform a bite check and polish off any excess material.

In some cases, you may experience a little soreness or discomfort in the treated area. This usually resolves in a few days without further intervention.

It is important to know that, if left untreated, damaged or decayed teeth can deteriorate over time and lead to pain, infection, swelling or become unrestorable and require extraction.

You will be able to discuss your treatment options during your consultation appointment and your dentist will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding dental fillings.
